YOUR PERSONAL RESUME GUIDE
First things first, let’s get a quick refresher:
¤ What is a resume? Your resume is a professional summary of your qualifications – from
educational background and skills to work experience and accomplishments. It’s the
professional story of your career, and it will continue to evolve as you gain more experience.
¤ What is the point of a resume? To get an interview! Your resume is your chance to show you
understand the needs and wants of the employer; and that you have qualifications that fit the
role.
¤ How can you stand out? Well, keep reading!
RESUME FORMATTING
While there is no one right way to format a resume, here are some general suggestions to help you create
a high-quality document that is sure to stand out.
PLATFORMS
We suggest using a word processing application or platform like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or
Pages to create your resume.
While some platforms offer pre-made templates (with design elements ranging from multiple
columns and design shapes to bold colors), we encourage you to use a simple format that is easy
to edit. Pre-made templates may be challenging to edit, especially as you continue to add
different experiences, skillsets, or tailor your resume further. Too many design elements may also
distract employers from focusing on your skills, experiences, and accomplishments.
Your future self will thank you for using a platform that will make editing and reorganizing simple.
Ultimately, you want your accomplishments, skills, and experience to speak for you.
LAYOUT
Use a layout that makes it easier for employers to scan for relevant skills and experience – after
