CAREER PLANNING GUIDE
Career planning starts early and continues throughout your time at WSU. Below you will find a sample
engagement chart. Many of the components are fluid, meaning, you can start engaging in these
opportunities at any time. It’s never too late to start planning for your future.
YEAR ONE: FOCUS ON SELF
This year is for exploration. Try something new, reflect on something familiar. It’s important to start
discovering what you are good at, how you like to spend your time, what you value, and where you want to
go. All this comes with self-exploration and experience.
¤ Skill Building Experiences: Registered Student Organizations
(RSOs); student employment; volunteer experience; Greek
organizations; athletics (recreational and/or competitive)
¤ Relationship Building: Connect with your peers, advisors,
faculty members, and staff members. Relationships take time to
build, so get started early.
GOAL: Each year at WSU, try
to form a relationship with at
least one person who can
serve as a future job
reference.
YEAR TWO: FOCUS ON EXPERIENCE
This is a critical year for skill building experiences. If you haven’t already, its time to start thinking about
how you want to spend your time outside the classroom.
¤ Experiential Learning: Undergraduate research; education abroad; virtual courses and
certifications
o WSU students have FREE access to skill building platforms like Forage and Parker Dewey
Micro Internships, but you can also find great opportunities via online platforms like
